Being proud of being Irish is like being proud to be a fucking nonce.

I can confirm that you can be very proud of Irish roots as well as being proud of being English.

The Stoke winger told RTE: 'He said he was a proud Irishman. Then he said he was a proud Englishman. If he's both... good luck to him but I don't buy it. I think you're either one or the other.'

He has Irish roots and English roots, is he only allowed to be proud of one part of his heritage?

Fucking idiot.

Thought he didn’t show for it enough from the centre backs.

Top teams use the DM as a third centre back and the CBs split meaning the full backs can go forward.

When Gomez and Stones are fit need our DM to do that. Rice needs to show he can do that and then ping balls around to those full backs or into Henderson / Alli.

Keep him in the squad but I’d play Winks over him against shit teams and Rice against France or Germany etc.

Hopefully that is the final nail in Dier's England career. Thought Rice looked alright last night, albeit against league one standard opposition. Hudson-Odoi must have given the ball away 20;times and everyone is raving about him too. Passable performances from the two young lads at best.

Ali shouldn’t have been in the squad last summer. Let alone last night. But Mr waistcoat won’t drop him. Don’t believe the hype people. Sure we will breeze through qualification. But when we come up against a team with a brain cell. We will get found out.

I'd have Winks over Henderson, all day long.

Can Southgate make the 'hard' choice that all the other England managers have bottled in recent times?

Drop a 'star' player for a less sexy name that makes the team, as a whole, function better? I hope he has the bollocks to. Only then will we really be able to maximise the potential.

I always come back to a quote from Dietmar Hamman about why England often fail. It's part of a much longer piece which is very interesting and I think bang on:

'The big problem with England is they pick the best players, not the best team. England have had some fantastic players: Ashley Cole, Ferdinand, Terry, Carrick, Lampard, Gerrard, Owen, Shearer, they always had goalscorers, but you need to build a team. You need a spine and foundation. Without balance you won’t win anything. England always had fantastic Christmas decorations but never had a tree.'

Rice and Henderson could be a big part of the tree. I don't really rate Henderson personally, but if him being there gets the best out of the team as a whole then he has to be there.

Said it multiple times on the game thread last night I don't think Alli fits this system at all and Barkley seems to have grabbed his chance with 2 hands.

Moving forward I think the midfield 3 has to be Rice, Henderson & Barkley

Re: Composed Declan Rice adds depth to this exciting England side
Henderson is to Rice in the England what Noble is to Rice in the West Ham side

DR had a very good debut last night but, the difference to Rice's game when Henderson replaced a tired and ineffective Alli was remarkable.

He lacks nothing in confidence but Rice and Henderson have a connection that Rice and Alli don't.

Hope Klopp was watching a re run of the Germany game.....

Re: Composed Declan Rice adds depth to this exciting England side
Henderson made a big difference last night but that was in a more advanced role and because, frankly, alli looks short of ideas at international level. I can’t remember the last time he had a reallyngood or signinificant game in an England shirt and, though he clearly wasn’t fully fit, he was the weak link at the World Cup.

With the attacking threat England now have rice is exactly what is needed - calm composed and comfortable on the ball, and as Kane states, looking to play the ball forward not sideways, but also not those irritating balls over the top to wingers that leave them isolated in the corners with no support like gerrard was prone to towards the end

I was impressed with rices composure and commitment last night and as a sub at the weekend - in games where we are dominating and creating chances he must be tempted to bomb forward on the centre too, but he showed great discipline to stick to the role Southgate gave him which allowed the fullbacks to get forward.

The last two games were never going to be ones for a holding midfielder to stand out, but he did everything that was asked of him and didn’t look out of place at all

El Scorchio 1:21 Tue Mar 26
Re: Composed Declan Rice adds depth to this exciting England side
Well I hope it is an offer we can't refuse, rather than him having his head turned and demanding a move away.

With the media purring about him and his debut behind him, it's likely inevitable he'll be at another club within 18 months.
